Terms of Use

These terms set out the conditions for using Prelaps (mojibake.prelaps.com) and any tool hosted on it. Last updated: August 2026

What the service is

A free tool that turns text garbled by an encoding mismatch back into the original. There is no sign-up and no user data is retained. All processing happens inside your browser.

Results are not guaranteed

This tool infers the most plausible answer from the distribution of characters. It does not compute a correct answer; it compares candidates and picks one, so it can be wrong.

By our own measurement, across 148 cases in 12 languages the first candidate is correct 84.5% of the time and the correct answer is among three candidates 96.6% of the time. These figures apply to that sample and are not a guarantee for every input. Accuracy drops sharply in particular when:

For anything important, keep the original safe before you use this tool. The operator accepts no responsibility for loss arising after a recovered result has been written over an original.

What you agree not to do

Anyone may use this tool freely. Please refrain from the following:

Rights in and responsibility for what you enter remain yours. The operator cannot see it.

Changes and discontinuation

This service is provided free of charge by an individual. Features may change and the service may be discontinued without notice; the operator bears no separate obligation to compensate for this.

Limitation of liability

To the extent permitted by applicable law, the operator is not liable for direct or indirect loss arising from the use of, or inability to use, this tool. It is provided "as is".

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the Republic of Korea, where the operator is based.
